Names, names names. So many overused, mediocre, clunky, or “that’s nice but it means WHAT?!” names…
If it’s male, Hunter and I already agree on Wesley. It’s his father’s middle name, and a favorite of both of ours. Unusual but not unheard of, dignified, and it means “from the west” which would be true enough. I think I can get him to let me give it my grandfather’s name for a middle- Virgil- so it would be Wesley Virgil Bishop. A very nice roll-off-the-tongue sort of name. (Update- Hunter thinks Virgil as a middle name is just fine, so we’re going to roll with that if it’s male)
But for a girl… well that’s not something that we’ve been able to determine. There is no hole-in-one name that we’ve yet found. Today I had some fun sifting through unusual name lists. I have a special penchant for Greek names, but there are plenty of others on there too. I like all of them, and I’m just rolling them all around right now in my head; not that it is even necesarry yet- but it’s fun to contemplate, and interesting to go through all the different names and their meanings.
For instance, I discovered that Whoopie Goldberg’s real name is, in fact, Caryn Elaine Johnson. I had to check when I discovered that “Whoopie” actually means….. “Whoopie” “Yippee” or “Hooray”… what a bizarre stage name that is, if you think about it.
Anyway, here’s some lovely names I picked out- in no particular order.
Persephone (Greek, goddess of the underworld)
Juniper (Latin, plant name)
Qadira (Arabic, powerful)
Willow (Old English, plant name)
Rosemary (Latin, dew of the sea, also a plant name)
Ophelia (Greek, to help, a helper, a character in Hamlet)
Demetria (Greek, Earth)
Penelope (Greek, The weaver. A character from Greek mythology.)
Artemisia (Greek, belonging to Artemis- goddess of the moon and the hunt)
Isadora (Greek, the gift of Isis)
Onora (Irish Gaelic, a form of honor)
Pania (Maori, a mythological sea-maiden)
Medea (the name of a princess and sorceress in mythology)
Rajani (Sanskrit, dark- of the night)
Alexandria (Greek, defender of mankind)
Rhiannon (Welsh, a nymph or queen)
Drusilla (Latin, from an old family name)
Daphne (Greek, The laurel. In Greek mythology, the name of a nymph who was transformed into a Laurel tree.)
Pandora (Greek, All-gifted, talented. A figure from Greek mythology.)
Cytheria- latin- venus- a pornographic actress!!!!
You’ve got some beautiful names there. I quite like Ariadne, which I think is Greek as well.
Ariadne? That’s lovely!!!! Do you know what it means, or if it’s a family name or something?
“The girl’s name Ariadne \a-riad-ne,ari(a)-
dne\ is pronounced ar-ee-AHD-nee. It is of Greek origin, and its meaning is “most holy”. Mythology: Ariadne, daughter of Cretan king Minos, helped Theseus escape from the Cretan labyrinth. Saint Ariadne of Phrygia (second century) was a slave who became a martyr. Also the subject and title of a Richard Strauss play. Arianne and Arianna are the French and Italian versions now also used in the English-speaking world.” She was also one of the eponymous Waterbabies from Charles Kingsley’s children novel. I think it’s very pretty 🙂
Really- that’s fantasic. It’s lovely, unusual, and doesnt’ rythme with anything nasty (something one should always consider when choosing a name!) Thank you for the history on it- I love background on names, it makes them so much more meaningful, you know?
Oh wow, I remember going through this stage of pregnancy LOL Persephone was actually the name I had picked when I was pregnant with Rayne, had he been a girl. I particularly like Ophelia, Artemisia, and Medea. A piece of advice that might sound strange: Don’t let people sway you out of any name you end up picking. It happened to my husband and I, when everyone around us convinced us how much flack we would get for it, or how much he would get picked on for it, or just plain “WRONG” it was. Years later, we still regret it. So if you pick a name, and people hate it, fuck em. Seems like simple advice, and unneeded when you think of yourself as independent and uncaring of others’ opinions, but when it comes to your child’s name, you’d be surprised at how independence can fall to the wayside as you worry whether you’re scarring your kid for life. LOL
You’re absolutely right. Happily, I don’t really have the kind of friends who would “disapprove” of any of my name choices. It’s more a balancing act between Hunter and I than between Us vs. The World. If I can find something that he and I both like alot and agree on, then that’s all I really care about. My best friends are people who are creative and interesting enough to understand that a unique name is a GOOD thing, and also none of their concern. My best friend Paris likes to say to me (and I to her) “darling you kow I love you and thank you for saying what you feel, but I just don’t care!” It’s good when you can listen and absorb the opinions of others without letting them bleed over into your own.
You are right, Wesley Virgil is a very dignified name that is neither out of this world odd nor overly used.
Naming your child is one of those things that takes some time, but once you stumble upon the right name you will know it.
When do you go for your ultrasound?
I go in in the 26th of this month. I’m rather pumped. BTW: My dear wonderful friend Paris GAVE me a boppy (!!), so the loan of yours is no longer necesarry. I wanted to thank you BIG TIME for the offer of the loan though. Truly, it really meant a lot to me.
When Ziphon was yet to be born, thinking of names was super-awesome-fun. At the time I wanted to name him Drew or if he was a girl, Emma. I love your name choices. I’m especially fond of Juniper and Isadora 🙂
